MATCH THE CAPABILITY TO THE QUESTION
INTERACTIVE LESSON 05
What does an EMF meter actually measure?
Different questions need different capabilities. Explore the modes before comparing the numbers.
Which capability fits the question?
Start with the question, then compare specifications.

Wireless signals: ask about RF
For a question about Wi-Fi or cellular signals, look for an RF measurement capability covering the relevant frequencies. An RF-only instrument is not a low-frequency magnetic-field meter.
Ask: Does its documented frequency range cover the source I want to investigate?
Electric fields: choose the right capability
Low-frequency electric-field measurements are commonly displayed in V/m. Follow the instrument instructions for positioning and handling. Do not compare the number directly with a magnetic-field reading.
Ask: Which electric-field frequencies, sensing axes and handling method does the manual specify?
Magnetic fields: a separate measurement
Low-frequency magnetic-field readings may be shown in microtesla or milligauss. Check frequency coverage and sensing axes. The label EMF meter alone does not tell you these capabilities.
Ask: Does the instrument measure the magnetic-field frequencies relevant to my question?
Record the conditions
Keep the position, orientation, mode and device activity consistent when comparing readings. Record units and whether a result is peak or average. A change in the setup can change what you are comparing.
Ask: Have I recorded the same conditions for both observations?
Understand a low or zero display
A low display is not proof that every field is absent. Consider the instrument range, sensitivity and selected mode. A reading alone cannot diagnose symptoms or establish a health outcome.
Ask: Could the signal be outside the frequency range, below detection or missed by this measurement method?
