EMF shielding curtains vs window film: what should you compare?

Compare shielding curtains and window film by installation, glass compatibility, coverage, daylight, maintenance and documented performance.

EMF Practical editorial desk · Published 17 October 2026 · Practical guide

Quick answer: Curtains offer an opening-and-closing routine; film attaches to the glazing and requires a compatibility check. Neither option alone establishes the shielding performance of an entire room. Choose around the window, intended result and documented installation.

Define the problem before choosing a material

Write down the source or measurement question you want to investigate and where you want to assess the result. A window treatment is a change to part of a room, not evidence that every relevant path has been addressed.

Record a baseline with suitable equipment before spending money. If the question requires a formal assessment, get advice from someone qualified for the relevant field and measurement method. Avoid buying a material solely because its name includes “EMF.”

Read installation instructions for the exact product

YSHIELD’s curtain guidance discusses overlap, proximity to the wall and handling considerations. These are manufacturer instructions for its products, not a guarantee for every curtain arrangement. YSHIELD curtain guidance.

For film, ask the supplier to confirm suitability for your exact glass construction before purchase. Compare installation side, optical properties and any grounding instructions in the current product documentation. YSHIELD’s RDF25 listing illustrates the kind of product-specific information to request.

Do not improvise electrical grounding or modify an outlet. Where an installation calls for electrical work, use a qualified professional and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Compare evidence on the same basis

Request the full attenuation report, not only the highest advertised figure. Identify the tested sample, frequencies and method. A fabric or film sample result should not be presented as a measured reduction at every point inside your room.

For a meaningful quotation, give each supplier the same window dimensions and intended arrangement. Ask which performance statements refer to the material and which, if any, are supported for the proposed installation. Keep those answers separate from claims about comfort or health.

Plan the before-and-after check

Choose repeatable measurement locations and record instrument settings, orientation, time and relevant device activity. After installation, repeat the same procedure. For curtains, record whether they were open or closed and how the edges were arranged.

Keep a record of ordinary usability too: daylight, opening the window, cleaning and network connectivity. A result at one point is not a complete room assessment, and a changed reading is not proof of a health benefit.

What to put in your buying shortlist

  • Exact product and installation instructions.
  • Window dimensions and glazing compatibility.
  • Material report and tested frequencies.
  • Proposed coverage and edge details.
  • Light, appearance and care requirements.
  • Total installation cost, warranty and return terms.
