Correction: The earlier distance calculator and fixed percentage reductions were not validated for an individual monitor or nursery. They have been removed.
1. Start with cord safety
CPSC advises keeping monitor cords at least three feet from any part of a crib, bassinet or play yard, and out of a child’s reach. This addresses strangulation, not an RF safety threshold. Follow the monitor’s installation instructions too.
2. Check the exact model
List the monitor’s wireless system, operating modes and available wired options. A feature labelled VOX or eco mode may control audio, the screen, transmission, or several functions. Check the manual; silence does not prove that every radio is off.
3. Compare settings carefully
If measuring, keep the instrument position and settings fixed, record its frequency coverage, and repeat observations during standby and active monitoring. A generic animation cannot predict an infant’s exposure or tell you a medically safe distance.
4. Keep monitoring reliable
After changing settings, test alerts, connection loss warnings and visibility. A wired connection does not make an entire room free of electromagnetic fields. Do not compromise the monitor’s intended function to achieve an unverified number.
Check your understanding
Does the three-foot cord rule establish an RF safety boundary?
Reveal the answer
No. It is guidance addressing cord strangulation hazards. It is not a calculated RF exposure limit.
