INTERACTIVE LESSON 13

5G Explained: Low-Band, C-Band & mmWave

5G is not a single frequency. Explore the 3 distinct frequency tiers, how phased-array beamforming focuses energy, wall penetration reality, and how to measure it.

STEP 1 OF 5: THE THREE DISTINCT 5G FREQUENCY TIERS

Choose a 5G Tier to Explore

Cellular 5G operates across three vastly different frequency bands, each with unique range, speed, and building penetration characteristics.

NATIONWIDE FOUNDATION

Low-Band 5G (600 - 900 MHz)

Range: Up to 10+ Miles
Speed & Capacity

Moderate (50 - 150 Mbps). Similar performance to refined 4G LTE.

Coverage & Range

Huge geographic coverage from traditional tall macro cell towers.

Wall Penetration

High. Easily travels through exterior home walls, brick, and foliage.

Consumer Meter Detection

Easily measured with standard consumer RF meters (e.g. Safe and Sound Pro II, TriField TF2).

Summary of Lesson 13: 5G Explained

1. Frequency Tiers: 5G is split into Low-Band (600–900 MHz), Mid-Band/C-Band (2.5–3.7 GHz), and High-Band mmWave (24–39+ GHz). Over 98% of residential nationwide 5G uses Low-Band and C-Band.

2. Beamforming vs. Broadcast: 5G Massive MIMO focuses power in narrow directional beams to active users rather than constantly flooding entire 120-degree sectors like older 4G towers.

3. Wall Attenuation: High-band mmWave has virtually zero penetration into homes through exterior brick, low-E glass, or foliage.

4. Meter Detection: Standard consumer RF meters covering up to 8 GHz measure all Low-Band and C-Band 5G signals accurately.
